My training was rough this week. I am starting to get into long runs. Today is sunday, my rest day. Yesterday I ran 13 miles. last sat I ran 12. The only time I have ever run 13 miles is when I ran the half marathon last May. This 13 hurt. Bad. I think my problem was my week. I ran 12 last week and felt fantastic. but then I got a respiratory sicknesses, its going around cause the weather has been crazy. so I ran 3 miles on tues. But then took off wed (6) and thurs (3). they are the first days I have taken off since training. The weather was horrible on fri so I didnt run. Then sat came around and I knew I had to get my run in. I was hoping my legs would be rested up from the weak, but knew it would probably hurt.
It was about 50 degrees. very cloudy. It had been raining for days, when I started my run it was not raining, but about 5 miles in it was coming down consistantly. I ran on the olentangy bike path and it was flooded!! There were a ton of puddles, most of the time I could run on the grass around the puddles on the path, but there were a few times where there was no getting around it. There were a lot of "leaps of faith" across huge puddles. and there were a few times that i had no choice but to run straight through the wet mud or the swamp like grass. I was wet anyways, but now my feet were soaked.
I ate breakfast, 2 peices of toast, eggs and veggie chorizo with onions, and coffee. Yum. I had waited about 45 min before i went on my run. I grabbed a little bag of gummy bears and jelly beans and put them in my pocket. I grabbed a small water bottle and drank about half and spilled about a quarter. I set it down at about 4 1/2 miles to pick up on my way back.
At about 8 1/2 miles I hit my turn around. At about 8 miles i got this horrible pain in my right hip. It got really stiff so I stopped at my turn around and stretched. I started running again and I felt like I was going to die. I hurt so bad at 9 miles. I saw this older couple that were running together that I had waved to on my way to the turn around. The guy was wearing the same half marathon shirt that I was wearing, and it was training season so I assumed that they were training for the half again. I decided to strike up a conversation with them to take my mind off the pain. It turned out they were running the half in cleveland when I was running the full. We chatted for about 2 miles, they were really nice, their pace was slightly slower then mine so it was nice to chat with these people for a while and get through a tough spot. Once we hit the swamped area we split paths. I picked my pace back up and felt like I was going to die again. Once I hit 11 1/2 miles my body was hurting.
at 12 miles i got off the bike path and headed up the hill that finished my last mile. It was a little trying to run that entire mile up hill, but it felt good because it caused my legs to move in a different stride.
I got home and I hurt. My husband took off my shoes and socks and got me water. I hurt bad and stretched and downed my power body by vi shake and felt a little better.I jumped in the shower and was doing ok until that evening when I sat down. After sitting for about an hour after putting my kid to bed, i got up to go the bathroom and my knee was throbbing. It hurt to move it in any way all the way until I fell asleep. any way that I laied it throbbed.
ICE BATH
My knee hurt all day today. I dont take medicine so I hadnt taken anything for it, but I had put some arnica massage oil that helped loosen it up for a little while. But man my knee hurt. My bum knee, which is my right knee hurt the most. It was stiff and sore and felt swollen. My whole body was kind of achey, but my knee was an actualy problem I could tell. I asked my brother in law, who is a marathon runner what to do and he recommened a few things, but told me that an ice bath would be best for inflamation. I hate the cold so I didnt know if I could do it.
So I looked up a lot of information on it and decided to try it out. I grabbed a half a bag of ice out of the freezer and put on some water for hot tea. I took the advice from runners world and took off everything below the waist, but put on a long sleeved shirt, a sweatshirt, and my thick winter jacket. I grabbed my runners world mag and my hot tea and put them next to the bath. I filled the water up just so it would cover to the bottom of my waist to get my hips. I got in with two feet and just stood for about 15 seconds to test it out and it hurt my bones so badly that i had to jump right out. I fell to the floor in pain. It hurt so bad.
I decided to try again and remembered reading about people using different temperatures. so i decided to warm it up just a little bit. It was still really really cold, but I think maybe it was a little too cold last time. I ran the hot water for about 20 seconds and tried again. I dont know what the temp was. the only thermometer I had was corbins ear one and that I guess doesnt read low temps. This time I got in and it was cold, but my bones didnt instantly ache. So I put my knees in and waited to warm up a little. I could tell it would be bareable and went ahead and sat in it, with all my stuff on, grabbed my hot tea and waited out the 15 min reading. It was ok as long as I didnt try to wiggle my legs, cause then I could tell they were numb and I didnt like that feeling.
I stayed in the tub and drained the water and warmed my legs up with a towel for about 5 min before i stood up. My legs were cold and numb. I had to sit under and blanket and snuggle with corbin for about 15 min before i wanted to do anything.
I can tell it helped. Man it was coooooold. But worth it. I think ill do it at least once a week the day of my long runs, and then do a muscle soak on the following day with hot water. mmm... hot water sounds good....
