WARNING: THERE ARE REALISTIC DETAILS IN THIS BLOG!
I had gone to the doctor for my 38 week checkup and he did an internal exam. I was about 2-3cm dilated and he told me he thought he would see me in the next few days. I was so excited cause by this point I was just about fed up with being pregnant and wanted that baby out!!! So we left the doctor and spent the day running errands and trying to walk the baby out. We went home that evening with no baby!
So the next day, Thursday I felt pretty sure I would go into labor that day. Or maybe I just really really wanted to. I got so nervous that day because my husband had to go to work at 4pm and I had had a quick labor with my first son, so I was convinced that as soon as I went into labor it would be a matter of hours before the baby came and if my husband was at work there was no telling when he would be able to come home. I made my husband call his work and it turned out they had given him the rest of the week off since the doctor said it would be any day. I was soooo relieved.
That night we went out and got spicy asian food to try to throw myself into labor. I had crazy BH contractions all evening, and I thought that I felt I was in labor, so I called my mom to ask her what she thought. She said that she thought my contractions would be a lot stronger if I was really in labor, so I decided to go to sleep and if I was in labor then they would wake me up and I could go in.
That night at 3:30 am I woke up to my water breaking. I had decided to go to bed with no pajama pants just in case this happened. Thank goodness! My water has never broke before so I didn't know what to expect. It wasn't as bad as I thought. I got wet, but was able to make it to the bathroom before I got too leaky. I sat there for a minute to make sure it was my water, I was pretty convinced it was cause I had never peed myself before and had no reason to think it was pee. I woke my husband up and we got ready. We made coffee, grabbed our packed bags and headed off to the hospital. It was warm out, mid 40s at the beginning of February, and raining outside. We drove to the hospital on the almost empty highway and made it to the hospital around 5. I had had no contractions yet since my water broke.
They checked me out and said my water did break, but I was still only 3cm dilated and my contractions were so tiny so they wanted to start me on Pitocin to make dilate. They admitted me into my room and I took a nap. Rough, I know. I was starting to feel contractions slowly as the hours passed, but nothing too exciting. I got checked a few times and I wasn't dilating AT ALL, but by about 4 pm my contractions were very steady and very uncomfortable. I had planned on getting an epidural but I wanted to make sure I was progressing. They checked me around 430 and I was still only 4cm dilated. UUUGGGHHHHH. So much for my quick labor.
Around 530 I got my epidural. Oh my gosh. OH MY GOSH. I was so nervous to get it cause I remember how painful it was. Its the worst. Now, I hear the pain of a natural labor is worse, and I am sure that is very true, but MY GOSH it is a painful process.
I still wasnt dilating so they started upping my Pitocin every 20-30 minutes or so. Nothing nothing nothing. I laid down (my legs were totally numb) and closed my eyes again. And then I started feeling very bad. I started feeling very sick and felt like I was going to throw up. On and off I would get horrible waves of nausea. Then I started feeling numb on my face and arms and I got really cold. They came in to check me out and do my routine blood pressure and temp and my blood pressure had dropped down to 80's/40's. I couldn't see the screen so I don't know what it exactly was, but they lady made a phone call and that is what she said. I cant remember exactly what they gave me, epinephrine I think to get my blood pressure back up. Over the next hour or so my blood pressure went up a little and leveled off around 95/56. Good enough I guess!
Around 9pm my nurse came in to check me again and told me the baby was in place...
