Chili results (old post)

Tuesday, June 8, 2010

That chili was slammin if I do say so myself. I will post the recipe for people if you want to try it. Everything I post will follow under the healthy delicious affordable guidelines, and that always serves enough food to feed a small family.

Rosemary Turkey Chili
serves 4-6 depending on hunger

-1lb lean ground turkey
- red onion
-1 can each
black beans
kidney beans
white beans
cambells tomato soup
diced tomatoes
-1 small pack of mushrooms, any preference
-1/2 bunch of scallions
-cumin
-red pepper
-mustard
-rosemary
-garlic
-salt

toppings:
-blue cheese
-hummus

All bottom 4 ingredients add the way you like. I went heavy on the rosemary and mustard, lighter on garlic salt (i used garlic salt, I would change that to garlic and salt) and red pepper. I really liked these two flavors together.

I browned the turkey and onions together, but I wouldnt do that next time. I would add them raw to add a crunch to the chili. Brown turkey in a large skillet with Extra virgin olive oil. Put everything canned and the onions in a pot and bring to a boil. Then add to the cooked turkey and then add all other ingredients except salt. All to taste. Stir everything up really good and then sprinkle about a 1/2 tsp of salt over everything and then cover and reduce heat to simmer. I let mine sit for about 20 on the stove. I think.

I dished some in a blow and then topped with 2 tbsp of hummus and an ounce of blue cheese. Put the blue cheese on first so it melts in.

Serve with a side of whole wheat pita bread. Serves 4 to 6 people depending on the size of your appetites. Proper serving 6, hungry serving 4.

Buyers tips-

Rule #1-Dont buy it if you dont know whats in it. That goes with everything you buy

buy the 97%, its the healthiest within price. Always make sure the ingredients are very basic like just turkey and water and salt.

with the canned stuff I choose weather or not to go organic based on the ingredients not the nutrition information. Healthy is naturally nutritious. The cheap black beans where just black beans and water, but the rest contained mucho chemicals, one had high fructose corn syrup. I dont get it. So I bought those 2 organic. Only like .30 pricier.

Everything else was just purchased throughout cooking. Spices last a while so I usually always have them. Rosemary I grow.

Mushrooms I just had left over and had bought some on clearance
** I usually always buy fruits vegetables and other healthy foods on clearance and then just plan my meals around what I have in my fridge.

I had the blue cheese in the fridge from salad, so I through that on top to get melty in the chili and added hummus I had made earlier. It gave a Mediterranean side to the chili which I liked and was different. I threw a piece of whole wheat pita on the side. I found a sale, 2/$5 instead of 4.50 each.

I give it two thumbs up. Cause I made it :)
