Check out the article referenced above (I wish I knew how to post it better)
They are enacting a program that will roll out new labels on food packaging that consist of four categories. Calories, sodium, saturated fat, and sugar. That is great and all but I am not sure if they are aware that if you make a 1/4 turn it lists that and everything else you could possibly need.
There was debate on weather the labeling should consist of the positive nutrient information, like whole grains and calcium, or the negative, like sodium and saturated fat. It looks as if the latter won out, but personally I dont understand why the change is needed.
If you look further down the article you will notice the worst part of all. "In the fall, they plan to begin a $50 million advertising campaign to promote the initiative." Well I have got a better Idea. Instead of spending 50 mill on advertising the double labeling of food, why dont we divvy up that money, 1 mill per state and enact a EDUCATION program. This would be a no/low cost education program offered to people so they can learn about the proper way to read the label that already exists.
HEY! maybe we could make it mandatory for anyone receiving government food benefits to take the class so they can be well informed about what they are purchasing for their families. I know that when I got a divorce they made me take a good parenting class. It was free, a lot of it I already knew, but I did learn a few things. It never hurts to be better educated.
I am so excited that our nation is trying to get their eating habits in check and that it is becoming a very popular subject. I am very happy that we have a first lady who is so passionate about the matter that she is involved first hand in what is going on. But I feel that our intentions are misguided. As well as our funds. spending 50 mill to put a label on a product TWICE is the wrong course of action. We need to educate our selves about food, and we need to retrain our ways so that we get out of this black hold that we have gotten our selves in. Its not about making it easier to read a label, its about taking the time to really care about ourselves and the children that are our future
